SOWING SEEDS
REAPING A FUTURE
“We know we cannot plant seeds with closed fists. To sow, we must open our hands.”
Adolfo Perez Esquivel
A Lifetime Of Service
Father Edmund Cheney was a man full of passion and dedicated his life to teaching in the classroom and his ministry. After he was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1942, he was sent to a Mission in Jamaica. He was eventually stationed at Above Rocks in the parish of St Catherine, as the name implies, in a mountainous part of the island. It was here that he became a reputed builder and priest who made a difference in the community.
Father Edmund Cheney was quite introspective as he saw the need to lay the foundation of a trade school for youth and older persons; he was also led to provide a school, considering those parents who could not afford it. He recognised children disadvantaged by the distance; today, the school he built is St Mary’s College.

We gathered there from differing backgrounds. It was difficult, but that school shaped us and our futures.
All of us made it because, at some point, someone offered a helping hand or just a word of hope.
We extend the same hope to the current generation.
